The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, based out of the University of Texas at Austin, has recently enrolled it's 5000th student in it's pioneering online education program. Knight Center offers journalists 91 online courses in Spanish, Portuguese, and English, and is available to students in every country in Latin America and most of the Caribbean.
Classes are usually four to eight weeks long and taught entirely online via the Knight Center's open-source course system called Moodle. Classes feature video lectures, chats, and discussion forums to keep students engaged. The investment required to make all of this a reality was funded by large grants from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The director of Knight Center has said that the demand for their courses remains high, especially from Latin America.
