Engineering professionals who want to advance further in their field may want to consider earning master's degrees, as this certification is often required for management positions. Many professionals choose to pursue online degrees in engineering management or business administration.

Given this demand, officials from Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) announced that the school will offer an online master's of engineering management degree. Engineering students in general do not learn about business in their undergraduate programs. While they can pick up some business skills through work experience, this may not be enough for them to advance their career to the management level. Penn State's engineering division has collaborated with their school of business administration and school of science, engineering and technology to create the program, which offers courses in negotiation, communication, teamwork, management, organization, problem solving and organizational learning.

Lancaster University ranked in the top ten out of 100 UK schools in national university league tables. The school was ranked ninth in the UK in an important national guide that is published online, and was also ranked top in the North West.

The university has ranked highly in a number of rankings, including the good university guide 2012. Such rankings take into account everything from student satisfaction to student staff ratio and employment prospects after graduation.

Recently, the university's accounting and finance program was ranked 4th and the business studies program ranked 7th in the guide's individual subject rankings as well. Many of Lancaster's courses and resources are offered online, including some of its accounting and finance lectures. Lancaster University is one of the top UK Universities for research, with a high proportion of its research rated 'world leading' in quality assessments against international standards of excellence. Overall, 92% of the research at Lancaster is recognized as being of an international standard, and 73% of university staff are ranked in the tops 20 of UK institutions for their individual disciplines.
